What is Weed?

What is Weed?

Weed, otherwise known as cannabis or marijuana, is a common but illegal drug and a highly addictive substance that can quickly develop into addiction for many users.

This form of substance is derived from the cannabis sativa plant, made from dried flowers, leaves, stems and seeds of the plant. Although it is commonly smoked, it can also be consumed in other ways, such as being eaten or drunk with other food or drink.

It can be known by many ‘street’ names, including marijuana, pot, ganja, dope and hash which also means it can be distributed in many different strengths with varying effects on the body and mind.

The main chemical in weed that impacts the brain is THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol). This is the chemical responsible for giving people the ‘high’ effect. In more recent years, this has been grown with stronger levels, making the effects of weed far stronger for those consuming it.

When smoking weed, the THC within it travels to the brain, affecting mood, memory, coordination, concentration and people’s perception of time. It produces psychoactive effects that can alter your mental health in the long run. Some users may find that weed relaxes them whilst others can experience paranoia, anxiety or confusions.

One of the biggest misconceptions when using weed is that this is a ‘safe’ drug; this is not the case. It can still be harmful to your body and mind with significant impact on your mental and physical wellbeing.
