Ketamine Addiction Treatment

Ketamine addiction is a growing concern in the UK. Traditionally used as an anesthetic for animals, ketamine has increasingly appeared in party and club scenes across the country. Used for its dissociative and hallucinogenic effects, the drug carries with it a high risk of dependency and addiction if it becomes misused.

Users can start to become reliant on the drug if they chase the intense dissociative “high” it produces, or if they start to use the drug to cope with stress or numb emotional pain. Over time, this reliance can develop into a full-blown drug addiction.

At New Leaf Recovery, our private drug rehabilitation centre provides everything individuals need to successfully conquer their cravings and overcome a dependency on ketamine. This includes a medically supervised detox and a wide range of therapies. Rehab provides the safe and structured environment that allows individuals to rebuild their physical and mental wellbeing, developing all the tools necessary to make a lasting recovery.

What is Ketamine?

What is Ketamine?

Ketamine is a powerful drug that is used medically as an anesthetic in humans and animals.  It belongs to a class of substances known as dissociative anesthetics.

As a dissociative drug, it primarily blocks NMDA receptors in the brain. This affects the way that pain signals and sensory information is processed. This leads to a feeling of detachment from the body and one’s surroundings, making it useful as an anesthetic, and for treating mental health disorders. However, many people obtain ketamine illegally and use the substance for its hallucinogenic and dissociative effects.

Outside medical settings, ketamine is commonly used illegally in club and party scenes. It is often referred to as “ket”, or “Special K”, and may appear as a white powder that is snorted or swallowed. People may take it to experience euphoria and dissociation. Taking large amounts can also lead to what what is known as a “K-hole”, which is a state of intense detachment from the body and surroundings.

Because ketamine alters perception and awareness so strongly, recreational use carries significant long-term risks. Over time, users may experience:

  • Impaired coordination
  • Memory problems
  • Depression and other mental health complications
  • Concentration problems
  • Changes in perception and psychosis
  • A reduced ability to feel pain, which can increase the likelihood of accidents or injuries.
  • Physical complications, particularly bladder damage often referred to as “ketamine bladder”.

Although some people believe ketamine is less addictive than other drugs, regular use can quickly lead to psychological dependence. Over time, users may begin to rely on the drug to escape stress or recreate past dissociative experiences. This pattern can gradually lead to compulsive use despite negative impacts on health, relationships, finances and other life responsibilities.

As tolerance develops, individuals may take larger or more frequent doses to achieve the same effects, increasing the risk of addiction and long-term harm.
