National Recovery Month 2023

What Is National Recovery Month 2023?

In September 2023, we’ll be celebrating National Recovery Month for the 34th time. It’s an annual event where we dedicate the month to raising awareness for people in the recovery journey of their mental health and substance use struggles.

National Recovery Month was started in 1989, by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). It has continued strong over the last three decades with more people participating each year.

The theme for National Recovery Month 2023 is ‘Hope is Real, Recovery is Real’.

Why Do We Celebrate National Recovery Month?

The purpose of National Recovery Month is not only to raise awareness of the struggles of a recovery journey. It’s also to provide support for the people going through recovery, and their families and friends, and create a community of people with common struggles.

The month is used to acknowledge the challenges faced by individuals on their path to healing, and highlight the various treatments and recovery centres available. This year’s theme seeks to create a discussion about how ‘Recovery is Real’ and bring attention to the evidence-based treatments that address the emotional, physiological and neurological aspects of an addiction recovery journey.

National Recovery Month 2023 is a celebration of resilience, courage, and the strength that arises from confronting one's struggles. It’s important to create positive conversations about recovery at the same time as recognising the difficulty.

What Can You Do to Celebrate National Recovery Month 2023?

This year SAMHSA have announced they’re organising the ‘Walk for Recovery’. The official ‘Walk for Recovery’ is on 7th September, in Washington D.C.. If you’re unable to join the official walk, you can do your own walk with your friends and family members!

There are other ways to get involved with National Recovery Month 2023! If you’re on your recovery journey, sharing your story could be a wholesome way to celebrate how far you’ve come and motivate others to begin their recovery.

You can look for events, hosted by organisations locally, that are discussing and raising awareness for National Recovery Month 2023. Workshops, seminars, and community gatherings offer opportunities to connect and learn.

If you’re looking to support others on the road to recovery, you can educate yourself about mental health, addiction, and recovery. This would mean you’re able to provide support in the best possible way for your loved ones who need it.

As September unfolds, let us collectively celebrate the 'Hope is Real, Recovery is Real' spirit. National Recovery Month 2023 is a call to action, a celebration of transformation, and a testament to the unwavering human spirit in the face of adversity.

A Digital Community of Support

The reach of National Recovery Month has expanded further through the digital space. Social media platforms have become modern-day town squares, where stories are shared, conversations unfold, and connections are formed.

Harnessing these platforms during National Recovery Month opens the door to connecting with individuals and organisations from around the world who are also on their recovery journeys. By sharing your own experiences, triumphs, and challenges, you not only inspire others but also foster a sense of solidarity that transcends borders.

Engaging in online discussions about recovery – whether it's sharing coping strategies, discussing the importance of support networks, or debunking myths about addiction – contributes to a broader dialogue. By participating in these conversations, you become part of a collective effort to shift perceptions, break down stigmas, and promote understanding.

Your virtual contributions can have a ripple effect that extends far beyond your immediate network. When you share your journey, insights, and progress, you inspire others to do the same.
