What is Alcohol Addiction?

Alcohol addiction, also known as alcohol use disorder (AUD), is a chronic condition that affects both the brain and body. It is characterised by the inability to control drinking habits despite negative consequences on health, relationships, and daily life. Over time, excessive alcohol consumption alters brain chemistry, leading to dependency and withdrawal symptoms when alcohol use is reduced or stopped.

Common Signs of Alcohol Addiction:

  • Feeling intense cravings for alcohol at all times of the day.
  • Needing large amounts of alcohol to achieve effects.
  • Drinking alone or in secret.
  • Neglecting responsibilities due to drinking habits.
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms such as tremors, anxiety, or nausea.
  • Continuing to drink despite experiencing health or social problems.

If you or someone you know is showing signs of alcohol addiction, seeking professional help is crucial for recovery.
